I love having seasonal books. I’ve been more aware of the Halloween and Thanksgiving books since our youngest was born (Halloween baby.) There are so many more out there then I realized. There’s basically a book for every season, and most holidays, with your favorite characters from books, TV and movies. Those can be good to peak interest and familiarity but I like to have more of a variety. We’re not outgrowing books in our house, not yet, as the older ones are able to, and enjoy, reading to our youngest. Here are a few favorites that appeal to all ages.
- The First Americans by Cara Ashrose. Learn about Native American tribes by region: a little history, culture and how the characteristics of each region influenced the way tribes lived off the land. Great for elementary school kids.
- Llama Llama Give Thanks by Anna Dewdney. Simple and cute introduction to the holiday in board book form. This is a good one for toddlers.
- What is Thanksgiving? by Michelle Medlock Adams. Another board book introduction to the holiday of Thanksgiving and being thankful. Another good one for toddlers and preschool age.
- You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie by Nicola Edwards & Natalie Marshall. Super cute, sentimental board book for little ones. Not specifically about Halloween but has related imagery.
- There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves! by Lucille Colandro. Funny one for older kids and great for early readers with repetition and rhythm throughout the story.
- Dora the Explorer: Say Boo! by Reader’s Digest. Cute Halloween board book with sturdy flaps, some Spanish, guessing game element, and lovable familiar character. Good for toddlers and preschool age kids.
- The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams. Cute repetition and suspense for kids. Good for kids of all ages who will like the onomatopoeia.
- Haunted Clubhouse (Disney Mickey Mouse Clubhouse) by Marcy Kelman. Cute board book with familiar favorites. This is another good one for young ones.
