We recently made our in-person return to our local library! It was very exciting for everyone. For my youngest, who hasn’t returned to daycare yet, the library was an especially amazing little outing. At only two years old, he literally did not remember going to the library, nor have any clue what it was. Because, COVID.
Can you imagine? Picture a little book lover walking into the big building, looking around, and seeing rows of bookcases, books on tables, books towering high above his head. Imagine the pure wonderment of it all. Then, getting to choose not one, not two, but a whole grownup armload of books to take home.
I have so much love for our local library and am so happy to be able to return safely in person. Our librarians were wonderful in welcoming us back, even though we arrived an (unexpected) half hour before closing. They were patient, kind, and helpful in making our return to the library a great success! (and got us out on time haha)
Troubleshooting COVID-19
Over the past year, our library did their best to continue serving our community through online book requests and contact-less pick-up through a drive-up window. With the varying COVID risk levels, I have to admit I didn’t consider trying to get library books until a few months ago. We utilized the online request and pick-up, which was very cool with drive up window and super easy to do with kids in tow. This was especially helpful in cold and snowy weather.
As with online grocery ordering, it can be extremely helpful and efficient if you know you want. It helps you stick to your list and is extremely convenient for squeezing in a quick pick-up between work, school, activities, etc. We had a great experience and may still take advantage of this option on occasion even though the library has reopened.
While I love how our library troubleshooted, the online request/pick-up just isn’t the same as searching for a new book in person. As with groceries, there will always be something that catches your eye in person that you may not have thought of yourself or that you didn’t remember when making a list. In person there’s the wandering the aisles, the browsing, the recommendations and assistance.
COVID-19 Protocols
If you’re ready to get back to the library, first check to see what your local branch is doing in terms of COVID protocol. It’s important to know before you go as you’ll likely see several changes to their standard operating procedures.
Some you may encounter:
- limited/different hours of operation
- mask requirement
- request to sanitize hands before browsing (aka touching things)
- limited time per visit
- limited/no computer access
- affected book availability due to quarantining books between borrowers
- differing availability of other services
Getting back to the library is a great way to explore endless amounts of books while saving lots of money AND getting out of the house. If your library isn’t open just yet, you can still check their website to see what services they may offer virtually, like the online request and book pick-up (and at least hopefully get some books and a trip out of the house.) Do a quick search on your phone today to see what your local library is up to.
Good luck and happy browsing!
